Abstract

Introduction: Seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) is a malaria control strategy targeting primarily Plasmodium falciparum, the deadliest species. Malaria diagnosis relies mainly on microscopic examination of thick and thin blood smears. Due to its limitations, microscopy cannot detect all parasite species, particularly when they coexist with P.falciparum.  The objective of this study was to determine the Plasmodium species present in an area under SMC.

Method: We conducted an experimental study on children aged 0 to 59 months in the province of Tuy in Burkina Faso who had a thick smear positive for P. falciparum on microscopy and a temperature above 37.5°C. Blood spots on the Whatmann 3M paper were collected for molecular analysis of Plasmodium species by nested PCR.

Results: A total of 57 children were selected with a male-to-female sex ratio of 1.25. The overall prevalence of P. falciparum infection was 100% with a P. falciparum monoinfection rate of 96.5% and 3.50% for Plasmodium. malarie co-infection rate in the study population.

Conclusion: This study highlighted the presence of a co-infection that microscopy could not reveal.  The use of the molecular tool is therefore essential to better evaluate malaria control strategies.
