Abstract

Abstract

Context

Vaccination against COVID-19 is an effective method of controlling the COVID-19 pandemic. From the outset of vaccine research, widespread vaccine hesitancy has been observed around the world, particularly in Africa. We decided to study the vaccination status of healthcare workers at the Abidjan Cardiology Institute (ICA) nine months after the start of the national COVID-19 vaccination campaign.

Méthods

This exhaustive, analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among ICA workers between 20 November 2021 and 4 January 2022 during the fourth wave of COVID-19 caused by the Omicron variant.

Results

Covid-19 vaccination coverage among ICA healthcare workers was 55.6%, with 44.4% not yet vaccinated. For full vaccination, coverage was 35.1% of staff. Vaccination coverage was higher among men than among women (61.6% vs. 50.2%; P=0.023). Among the professional categories, other paramedical professions had the lowest vaccination rates (31.6%; p=0.00). In logistic regression analysis, the determinants of COVID-19 vaccination were advanced age and higher education, the latter being the main factor associated with vaccination.

Conclusion

There is still a need to communicate with all healthcare workers about the safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines. Involvement at the management level could increase their uptake of vaccines and, as a result, improve vaccination coverage in the general population.
