Introduction
Despite efforts to strengthen the fight against this disease, viral hepatitis B remains a public health problem in Burkina Faso.
The objective of our study is to describe the prevalence and associated factors of viral hepatitis B in a context of significant security challenges.
Method
This was a cross-sectional study covering the period from December 2025 to February 2026 and including individuals aged 15 years and older. Sampling was exhaustive and included participants in the hepatitis B screening campaign. Socio-demographic, behavioral, and clinical data were collected using a data collection form and subsequently entered into an ODK electronic form. Data analysis was performed using Stata software, and we calculated proportions.
Results
The mean age of participants was 41.72, with women constituting the majority (67.19%). Internally displaced persons accounted for 46.63%. As for the reason for participation, nearly all participants wanted to know their serological status (99.24%), and 94.57% reported no history of hepatitis B. The overall prevalence of hepatitis B for both sites was 9.42%. In the multivariate analysis, male gender, having an occasional sexual partner, and being aged 30–49 years were statistically associated with hepatitis B virus infection.
Conclusion
The prevalence of viral hepatitis B remains high in our region. Providing free screening, treatment, and vaccination against hepatitis B could help reverse this trend.
