Abstract

Introduction: Eliminating onchocerciasis relies on effective entomological surveillance. The reference method, human baiting, presents major ethical limitations. This study aims to develop standardized synthetic trapping tools by optimizing visual and olfactory stimuli to capture Simulium damnosum s.l. and other vectors of medical and veterinary interest.

Methods: The experiment was conducted in Burkina Faso. Four types of sticky targets (blue, black, and two blue/black striped patterns) were compared. All targets were baited with the artificial attractant POCA. Data were analyzed using generalized linear models (GLMs) with a negative binomial distribution.

Results: Over 12 days, 3,476 specimens belonging to 11 taxa were collected. The fauna was dominated by *S. damnosum* s.l. (51.5%), followed by tsetse flies (23.4%) and biting muscids (18.5%). The blue target proved most effective for blackflies (*, *) and tsetse flies. In contrast, the blue-black-blue tricolor pattern captured significantly more *Stomoxys nigra* than the solid-color targets (*).

Conclusion: The study demonstrates a synergy between visual and olfactory stimuli. The use of blue screens with POCA is recommended for multi-purpose monitoring (onchocerciasis and tsetse flies). For animal nuisances (tsetse flies), alternating patterns are more effective. These tools offer an ethical and economical solution for integrated vector management within the One Health approach.
