Utilisation des ligneux et préférences alimentaires de l’éléphant dans la Réserve de Biosphère de la Mare aux Hippopotames au Burkina Faso

Les éléphants d'Afrique (Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797) exercent une
pression considérable sur les formations ligneuses des aires protégées d’Afrique
subsaharienne. La Réserve de Biosphère de la Mare aux Hippopotames (RBMH),
située dans la région du Guiriko au Burkina Faso, constitue un des derniers refuges
d’éléphants dans ce pays. La présente étude analyse l’utilisation des espèces ligneuses
et les préférences alimentaires de l’éléphant dans cette réserve à partir d’un relevé de
195 arbres endommagés appartenant à 29 espèces. Quatre types de dégâts ont été
caractérisés : l’ébranchage (50,8 %), le tronc cassé (28,2 %), le déracinement (19,0 %)
et l’écorçage (2,6 %). Vitellaria paradoxa Gaertn. C. F. (20,0 %), Detarium
microcarpum Guill. et Perr. (12,8 %) et Combretum collinum Fresen. (7,2 %) sont les
espèces les plus affectées. Le test du chi-deux révèle une association hautement
significative entre les espèces et les types de dégâts (χ² = 242,88 ; df = 54 ; p < 0,001).
L’analyse de Mann-Whitney montre que la circonférence de l’arbre influence
significativement les types de dégâts de déracinement (U = 4642 ; p < 0,001) et
d’écorçage (U = 924 ; p < 0,001). Ces résultats soulignent la sélectivité alimentaire de
l’éléphant et fournissent des données essentielles pour la gestion durable de la RBMH.
