cockroaches, urban ecology, biodiversity, interspecific interactions, nutrient recyclingAbstract
Cockroaches (order Blattodea) constitute an ancient and remarkably resilient lineage of insects. Distributed across a broad range of terrestrial habitats, they are commonly regarded as pests owing to their ability to harbor and transmit pathogenic microorganisms. Despite this reputation, cockroaches fulfill essential ecological functions, particularly in the decomposition of organic matter and the recycling of nutrients. This article presents a comprehensive review of contemporary knowledge on cockroach diversity, their physiological and behavioral adaptations, and their ecological importance in both natural ecosystems and anthropogenically altered environments.
