The main reasons for inspection seizures and economic losses among ruminants slaughtered at the Ouagadougou refrigerated slaughterhouse from 2018 to 2019

Abstract

The main reason for meat inspection is to protect public health and provide healthy
products to consumers. Inspection provides information that can be used to control
zoonotic diseases. A retrospective study was conducted at the Ouagadougou
refrigerated slaughterhouse using data from inspection seizures extracted from the
statistical databases of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal and Fisheries
Resources from January 2018 to December 2019. The analysis of the data showed
that cattle represent 92% of all ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats) inspected.
Tuberculosis (25.4 per cent) and onchocerciasis cysts (21.1 per cent) were the main
reasons for seizures, followed by congestion (14.4 per cent) and putrefaction (8.8
per cent). Cattle are the cause of the majority of economic losses with an amount
of 126,765,170 CFA francs. This represents 96.8% of the total economic losses
caused by all ruminants. Cattle losses increased from 2018 to 2019, while those
related to total and partial seizures of goats remain low. However, losses due to the
partial seizure of sheep halved from 2018 to 2019. Overall, they increased by 10
million CFA francs from 2018 to 2019. Collaboration between the public and
animal health sectors is imperative to define a common prevention and control
strategy to reduce cases of inspection seizures and avoid cash and nutritional
losses.
