Abstract

In Burkina Faso, the development of market gardening has been accompanied by the
intensive use of pesticides aimed at improving agricultural yields. However, poor
phytosanitary practices can pose risks to human health and the environment. This
study aimed to contribute to the assessment of health risks associated with pesticide
use in vegetable farming in Bobo-Dioulasso. A descriptive and analytical cross-
sectional study was conducted among 90 farmers spread across six market garden
sites. Data were collected using a KoboCollect questionnaire. Active ingredients were
characterized using databases from the Sahelian Pesticide Committee and the World
Health Organization, while health and environmental risks were evaluated using a 5×5
criticality matrix. A total of 26 commercial pesticide names were recorded, of which
23.08% were unregistered. Among the registered products, 35% were intended for
cotton cultivation. Sixteen active ingredients were identified, predominantly
Abamectin, Emamectin benzoate, and Lambda-cyhalothrin. The main poor practices
observed included non-compliance with recommended doses (33.33–80%), pesticide
mixing (6.67–60%), excessive application frequencies (26.67–80%), and failure to
respect pre-harvest intervals. Regarding toxicity, 54% of the active ingredients were
identified as proven reprotoxins, 30.77% as probable reprotoxins, and 15.38% as
proven endocrine disruptors. To ensure the rational use of pesticides, awareness-
raising, training, and regulatory enforcement efforts must be intensified
