Abstract

In light of the gradual decline in soil productivity and limited access by producers to
organic resources, the use of household waste as compost appears to be a promising
solution for improving tomato production. This study aimed to assess the agronomic
potential of compost made from household waste sorted at source. A trial was
conducted in Bobo-Dioulasso during the wet and dry seasons. The trial used a Fisher

block design with eight treatments: T1 (no fertiliser); T2 (compost made from source-
separated household waste (30 t/ha)); T3 (compost made from crop residues (30 t/ha));

T4 (urban waste not source-separated (30 t/ha)); T5 (NPK (300 kg/ha) + urea (200
kg/ha)); T6 (compost made from source-separated household waste (30 t/ha) + NPK
(300 kg/ha) + urea (200 kg/ha)); T7 (compost made from crop residues (30 t/ha) +
NPK (300 kg/ha) + urea (200 kg/ha)); and T8 (urban waste not sorted at source (30
t/ha) + NPK (30kg/ha) + urea (200 kg/ha), with four replicates set up. Plant hight,
diameter and fruit yield were measured. Soil sample were taken at 0 - 20 cm for labs
analysis of soil pH, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium. The results showed that
organic fertilizers significantly improved fruit yields (by 36 and 186 per cent)
compared to using mineral fertilizer alone. When combined with mineral fertilizer,
compost made from sorted household waste presented higher yields, with an increase
of between 217 and 257 per cent compared to mineral fertilizer alone. It also improved
the soil's phosphorus and potassium levels. This demonstrates the agronomic potential
of compost made from household waste.
