Abstract

The adoption of agri-ecological practices appears to be a sustainable alternative for
reducing growers’ dependence on chemicals. This study aims to assess the effect of
different organo-mineral fertilizers on onion bulb yield. Four treatments were tested,
alongside a control, using a Random-block arrangement with four replicates.
Treatment T1 consisted of aerobic compost enriched with EM (effective
microorganisms), T2 of Jafgreen Verdure, T3 of Jafgreen Atonik and T4 of Jafgreen
Tropical. The experiment covered a single onion growing cycle. The results showed
that fertilizers influence the morphology of the onion, particularly its ability to bolt,
which was 80 per cent for the fertilized treatments, whilst the control remained unable
to bolt. Furthermore, the colour of the bulb scales varied between light green (60 per
cent) and dark green (40 per cent). The tallest plants were observed in the T3 treatment
(Atonik), followed by T1 (compost). The number of bulbs per bed was significantly
higher with compost (T1), whilst yields were significantly higher with T4 (Tropical).
The majority of bulbs (91.5 per cent) had a diameter greater than 30 mm, but only
37.5 per cent exceeded 45 mm. The Tropical fertilizer (T4) could improve the
profitability of onion cultivation by increasing marketable yield and growers’ income.
However, studies spanning several production cycles are needed to confirm the
robustness and reproducibility of these results.
