Abstract

The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is an agroecological alternative to
conventional rice production systems. This study aims to analyse the determinants of
SRI adoption in Burkina Faso, highlighting the role of labour constraints and SRI
techniques, particularly the method of sowing. The study was carried out in four
administrative regions of the country: Bankui, Guiriko, Tannounyan and Sourou. Data
were collected through individual surveys of 1167 rice farmers in lowlands and
developed plains across the four administrative regions. A binary logit model was used
to identify the factors influencing the decision to adopt SRI. The results reveal that
39.16 per cent of the farmers surveyed have adopted SRI. They also show that the
adoption of SRI is positively influenced by access to training, education, the type of
ecology, and the agroecological zone of the system. Furthermore, although
transplanting remains the predominant method, row sowing appears to be positively
and significantly associated with SRI adoption, reflecting a diversity of ways in which
producers are adapting the system. For large-scale dissemination, the results suggest
the need for a phased and gradual extension approach to SRI in order to address the
reluctance of potential farmers without undermining the agronomic foundations of the
system.
