Quality of mineral nutrients in feed ingredients used in intensive poultry farming in Burkina Faso: the case of the city of Ouagadougou

Abstract

Feed, is one of the major challenges facing intensive poultry farming in Burkina
Faso. The aim of the study was to assess the mineral nutrient content of poultry
feed in the city of Ouagadougou. In fact, a survey was conducted at the main
livestock markets in the city to identify the raw feed materials that could provide
these mineral nutrients and that are marketed for poultry feed. At the end of each
interview, feed samples were taken. A total of 223 samples of feed raw materials
(organic base) and 22 others (mineral base) were collected and analyzed using
standard methods to determine their mineral composition. The results show that
almost all of the organic feed analyzed was richer in phosphorus than in calcium.
The copper content of the cereal samples varied between 3.53 and 10.3 ppm and
the zinc content between 4.53 and 23.5 ppm (mg/kg DM). Their bran had contents
varying between 4.33 and 12.72 ppm (for copper) and 20.66 and 74.94 ppm (for
zinc), respectively. Bone meal was found to contain the highest levels of minerals
compared to limestone and oyster shells, with P and Ca levels of 135.2 and 374.4
(g/kg DM) respectively. These results could be used as a referential or optimizing
animal feed by providing more detailed data on the quality of the raw feed
materials needed to formulate rations
