Fresh tomatoes are an important food product in the diet of households in urban and
peri-urban areas of Ouagadougou. However, its market faces major challenges,
including product perishability and market imperfections that affect its functioning
and performance. This study analyzes the fresh tomato market using the Structure,
Conduct and Performance (SCP) approach. Data were collected from 292 producers
selected via snowball sampling, as well as from 126 traders and 130 consumers
selected via purposive sampling. The results show that the CR4 and Herfindahl-
Hirschman Index (HHI) indicate a competitive market structure at both the production
and marketing levels, with CR4 values of 0,07 and 0,18 and HHI values of 0,007 and
0,023, respectively. However, the Gini coefficients of 0,51 for production and 0,64 for
marketing reveal an unequal distribution of income among actors. Analysis of market
conduct indicates that traders play an important role in price formation, reflecting their
influence in market transactions. In terms of performance, wholesalers capture higher
net monthly margins than producers, indicating an unequal distribution of the value
generated along the market chain. Overall, despite its competitive structure, the fresh
tomato market exhibits imperfections related to unequal income distribution, price
formation mechanisms, and the influence of traders. The study recommends
strengthening coordination among value chain actors and institutional mechanisms to
improve market functioning and performance.
